The Patience of Prophet ZulKifl (AS) and the Devil's Trick

The Patience of Prophet ZulKifl (AS) and the Devil's Trick Hazrat Mujahid (RA) writes that when Prophet Al-Yasa (AS) became very old, he wished that before his death, he could appoint a pious and righteous person as his successor (Khalifa). He wanted someone who would take care of the religious matters after him and whom he could train while still alive so that he would be free from worrying about Bani Israel before his death. One day, Prophet Al-Yasa (AS) gathered the people of Bani Israel and said: "O people! You can see that I have become very old. I want to appoint a righteous person as my successor while I am still alive. But I will only appoint the one who fulfills three conditions: 1. He must fast during the day. 2. He must worship Allah at night. 3. He must not get angry." The gathering became silent. Suddenly, a simple man sitting in a corner stood up and said: "I fulfill all three of your conditions." Prophet Al-Yasa (AS) asked him again: "Do you truly meet all three conditions?" The man replied: "Yes, I do." Prophet Al-Yasa (AS) did not say anything and ended the gathering until the next day. The next day, he repeated his question. Everyone remained quiet, but the same man stood up and said: "I promise to keep your three conditions." So, Prophet Al-Yasa (AS) made him the Khalifa. That person was Prophet Dhul-Kifl (AS). Iblis (the devil) was sitting in a corner watching all this. He could not tolerate it. So, he ordered his followers: "Try your best to misguide ZulKifl (AS) and take him off the right path." But all of them failed. Then Iblis himself decided to do the job. Prophet ZulKifl (AS) had a habit of taking a short nap (Qailulah) at noon. One afternoon, Iblis disguised himself as a poor, weak old man in very bad condition and came to the house of Prophet ZulKifl (AS). Just as the Prophet (AS) was lying down to rest, there was a knock on the door. He asked: "Who is it?" Iblis replied: "I am an oppressed, weak old man, and I have come to you for justice." The Prophet (AS) opened the door and saw a very weak and frail old man. Before the Prophet (AS) could ask him anything, the old man (Iblis) started telling a long, fake story about how his people were being unjust to him. He talked so much that Prophet Dhul-Kifl (AS) missed his rest time and it became evening. The Prophet (AS) kindly told him: "Okay, go now and come to the court this evening. I will give you justice." The old man (Iblis) left. In the evening, Prophet ZulKifl (AS) waited in court, but the old man did not come. The next morning, the Prophet (AS) again looked for him but he did not appear. When the Prophet (AS) lay down to rest at noon, there was a knock again. When he opened the door, the same old man (Iblis) was there. The Prophet (AS) said gently: "I told you to come to the court in the evening, but you did not come." The old man replied: "O Khalifa! My people are very evil. When they heard that you would decide my case, they got scared and promised to give me my rights. But when I went to them, they broke their promise." The Prophet (AS) said: "Alright, come again this evening, and I will make sure you get your rights." But once again, that afternoon, the old man kept the Prophet (AS) busy in talks and did not let him rest. In the evening, the old man did not come again. For two days, Prophet ZulKifl (AS) could not rest. By the third day, he was extremely tired. So, he told his family: "Today, during my nap, do not open the door for anyone." But as soon as the Prophet (AS) lay down, the old man came again and knocked on the door. The family said: "The Khalifa has ordered that no one should open the door." The old man replied: "I have been coming for two days. The Khalifa himself called me today." But the family did not open the door. The old man waited for a while, then used his evil powers to enter the house without opening any door. He knocked on the Prophet’s (AS) room door from inside the house. When Prophet ZulKifl (AS) opened the door, he saw the same old man. He turned to his family and said: "I told you not to open the door." The family replied: "By Allah! We did not open the door. You can see, all the doors and windows are still closed." The Prophet (AS) looked around and saw that it was true. All doors and windows were shut. He looked carefully at the old man and said: "O enemy of Allah! Are you Iblis (the devil)?" Iblis replied: "Yes, I am Iblis. You defeated my followers, and now you have tired me out too. I wanted to make you angry so that you break your promise, but I failed." Dear brothers and sisters, Shaytan always tries to misguide us. He puts bad thoughts in our hearts and tries to lead us away from the right path. But we must protect ourselves from every attack of Shaytan through patience, worship, and the remembrance of Allah. May Allah give us the strength to do so. Ameen. (Reference: Ibn Kathir) حضرت مجاہدؒ لکھتے ہیں کہ جب حضرت الیسعؑ بہت بوڑھے ہو گئے تو آپؑ نے دل میں خواہش کی کہ کاش! میں مرنے سے پہلے کسی نیک اور صالح شخص کو اپنا خلیفہ مقرر کر دوں، جو میرے بعد دین کے کاموں کو اچھے طریقے سے سنبھالے۔ میں چاہتا تھا کہ اپنی زندگی میں ہی اس کی تربیت کر دوں تاکہ مرنے سے پہلے بنی اسرائیل کی فکر سے آزاد ہو جاؤں۔ ایک دن حضرت الیسعؑ نے بنی اسرائیل کے لوگوں کو جمع کیا اور فرمایا: "اے لوگو! تم دیکھ رہے ہو کہ میں بہت بوڑھا ہو چکا ہوں۔ میں چاہتا ہوں کہ تم میں سے کسی نیک آدمی کو اپنا خلیفہ بنا دوں۔ مگر میں اسے ہی خلیفہ بناؤں گا جو تین شرطوں پر پورا اُترے۔ پہلی شرط یہ کہ وہ دن کو روزہ رکھتا ہو، دوسری شرط یہ کہ رات کو اللہ کی عبادت کرتا ہو، اور تیسری شرط یہ کہ وہ غصے نہ آتا ہو۔" مجلس میں سب لوگ خاموش تھے۔ اچانک ایک عام سا آدمی جو کونے میں بیٹھا تھا، کھڑا ہوا اور بولا: "میں آپؑ کی تینوں شرطوں پر پورا اُترتا ہوں۔" حضرت الیسعؑ نے اس سے دوبارہ پوچھا: "کیا تم واقعی ان تینوں شرطوں پر پورے اُترتے ہو؟" اس شخص نے کہا: "جی ہاں!" حضرت الیسعؑ نے کوئی جواب نہیں دیا اور مجلس ختم کر دی۔ دوسرے دن پھر حضرت الیسعؑ نے یہی سوال دہرایا۔ سب خاموش تھے، وہی شخص پھر کھڑا ہوا اور کہا: "میں آپؑ کی تینوں شرطوں پر پورا اُترنے کا وعدہ کرتا ہوں۔" حضرت الیسعؑ نے اسے اپنا خلیفہ مقرر کر دیا۔ وہ شخص حضرت ذوالکفلؑ تھے۔ ابلیس (شیطان) یہ سب ایک کونے میں بیٹھا دیکھ رہا تھا۔ وہ برداشت نہ کر سکا اور اپنے چیلوں کو حکم دیا کہ "ذوالکفلؑ کو گمراہ کرنے کی پوری کوشش کرو۔" لیکن اس کے چیلے ناکام ہو گئے۔ پھر ابلیس نے خود میدان میں آنے کا فیصلہ کیا۔ حضرت ذوالکفلؑ دوپہر کے وقت قیلولہ (آرام) کرتے تھے۔ ایک دن ابلیس بوڑھے فقیر کا روپ دھار کر آپؑ کے دروازے پر آیا۔ آپؑ بستر پر لیٹے ہی تھے کہ دروازہ کھٹکھٹایا گیا۔ آپؑ نے پوچھا: "کون ہے؟" ابلیس بولا: "میں ایک مظلوم بوڑھا ہوں، انصاف کے لیے آیا ہوں۔" آپؑ نے دروازہ کھولا تو ایک کمزور اور ضعیف بوڑھا دیکھا۔ اس نے اپنی قوم کے ظلم کی جھوٹی کہانی سنانی شروع کر دی۔ اس نے اتنی لمبی باتیں کیں کہ آپؑ کا آرام کا وقت نکل گیا۔ آپؑ نے کہا: "اب تم شام کو عدالت میں آنا، تمہاری فریاد سنی جائے گی۔" وہ چلا گیا۔ شام کو حضرت ذوالکفلؑ عدالت میں اس بوڑھے کا انتظار کرتے رہے، لیکن وہ نہیں آیا۔ دوسرے دن صبح آپؑ پھر اس کا انتظار کرتے رہے۔ دوپہر کو جیسے ہی آپؑ آرام کرنے لگے، دروازہ پھر کھٹکھٹایا گیا۔ آپؑ نے دروازہ کھولا، تو وہی بوڑھا کھڑا تھا۔ آپؑ نے نرمی سے کہا: "میں نے تمہیں شام کو بلایا تھا، تم کیوں نہیں آئے؟" بوڑھے نے کہا: "اے خلیفہ! میری قوم بہت بری ہے۔ جب انہیں پتا چلا کہ آپؑ فیصلہ کریں گے تو وہ ڈر گئے اور مجھ سے وعدہ کیا کہ میرا حق دے دیں گے۔ لیکن اب وہ پھر وعدہ توڑ گئے ہیں۔" آپؑ نے کہا: "ٹھیک ہے، آج شام کو آ جانا، میں تمہارا حق دلا دوں گا۔" اس دن بھی بوڑھے نے آپؑ کو باتوں میں لگا کر آپؑ کو قیلولہ نہیں کرنے دیا۔ شام کو بھی وہ نہیں آیا۔ دو دن آرام نہ کرنے کی وجہ سے آپؑ پر نیند کا شدید غلبہ تھا۔ تیسرے دن آپؑ نے گھر والوں سے کہا: "آج قیلولہ کے وقت دروازہ کسی صورت نہ کھولنا۔" مگر جیسے ہی آپؑ بستر پر لیٹے، پھر دروازہ کھٹکھٹایا گیا۔ گھر والوں نے کہا: "خلیفہ کا حکم ہے، دروازہ نہیں کھولیں گے۔" بوڑھا بولا: "میں دو دن سے اپنا معاملہ لے کر آ رہا ہوں، خلیفہ نے آج دوپہر بلایا ہے۔" مگر دروازہ نہ کھولا گیا۔ پھر بوڑھے نے شیطانی طاقت سے گھر کے اندر داخل ہو کر کمرے کے دروازے پر دستک دی۔ حضرت ذوالکفلؑ نے دروازہ کھولا تو بوڑھے کو دیکھا۔ آپؑ نے گھر والوں سے کہا: "میں نے تو کہا تھا دروازہ نہ کھولنا!" گھر والوں نے کہا: "اللہ کی قسم! ہم نے دروازہ نہیں کھولا۔ آپؑ خود دیکھ سکتے ہیں کہ سب دروازے بند ہیں۔" آپؑ نے غور سے دیکھا، تو واقعی دروازے بند تھے۔ پھر آپؑ نے بوڑھے کو غور سے دیکھا اور فرمایا: "کیا تو ابلیس ہے؟" اس نے کہا: "ہاں! میں ابلیس ہوں۔ آپؑ نے میرے چیلوں کو بھی قابو کر لیا اور مجھے بھی ہرا دیا۔ میں چاہتا تھا کہ آپؑ کو غصہ دلا دوں تاکہ آپؑ اپنی شرط پر قائم نہ رہ سکیں، لیکن آپؑ نے صبر کر کے مجھے شکست دے دی۔" بھائیو اور بہنو! شیطان ہر وقت ہمیں گمراہ کرنے کی کوشش کرتا ہے۔ وہ ہمارے دلوں میں وسوسے ڈالتا ہے تاکہ ہم اللہ کی راہ سے ہٹ جائیں۔ مگر ہمیں چاہیے کہ ہم صبر، نماز اور اللہ کی یاد سے شیطان کے ہر وار کو ناکام بنا دیں۔ اللہ ہمیں اس کی توفیق عطا فرمائے۔ آمین۔ (ابنِ کثیرؒ)
