The Story of Balaam bin Beor: A Scholar's Fall from Grace
Balaam bin Beor (بلعم بن باعوراء) was a great scholar, worshipper, and ascetic of his time. He possessed the knowledge of Ism-e-Azam (The Greatest Name of Allah) and, through his spirituality, could witness the Divine Throne from his seat. His prayers were widely accepted, and his supplications were rarely rejected. Balaam had a large following of students, and it is said that the number of inkwells in his school reached twelve thousand. When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) set out with the army of the Children of Israel to fight against the "people of Jabarin," Balaam's nation, worried and frightened, came to him. They pleaded with him, saying, "Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) is leading a strong and powerful army to attack us. He aims to drive us out of our land and give it to his nation, the Children of Israel. Please, pray against him so that he is defeated and retreats. Since your prayers are accepted, your supplication will surely work."Hearing this, Balaam bin Beor trembled and responded, "Woe to you! May God protect us! Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) is a Messenger of Allah, and his army includes believers and angels. How can I pray against them?" However, his people continued to beg and insist, crying and pleading before him. Eventually, Balaam said, "Let me perform Istikhara (seeking divine guidance). If I receive permission, I will pray against them."After performing Istikhara, Balaam did not receive permission to make the supplication. He then outright refused, saying, "If I pray against them, I will lose both my worldly and eternal salvation."Despite this, his nation tempted him with numerous valuable gifts and presents, pleading persistently. Gradually, greed and desire overtook him, and he fell into the trap of wealth. Succumbing to their requests, Balaam mounted his donkey and set out to pray against Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and his army. Along the way, his donkey repeatedly stopped and turned back, refusing to move forward. Balaam, in frustration, beat the donkey to continue onward. Finally, Allah granted the donkey the ability to speak. The donkey said, "Woe to you, Balaam! Where are you going? Angels stand ahead of me, blocking my path and turning me back. Do you intend to pray against Allah's Prophet and the believers?"Even after hearing this, Balaam persisted and climbed Mount Hisban. From its peak, he looked upon the army of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). Overcome by greed, he began to pray against them. However, by the will of Allah, whenever Balaam intended to utter a supplication against Musa (peace be upon him), words of prayer against his own people came from his tongue instead. His people noticed this and repeatedly corrected him, saying, "O Balaam, you are praying in reverse!" Balaam replied, "What can I do? I speak one thing, but something entirely different emerges from my tongue."Suddenly, Allah's wrath descended upon him. His tongue extended and hung from his chest. In despair, Balaam cried to his people, "Woe to me! My worldly and eternal lives are ruined. My faith has been taken away, and I am now subjected to the wrath of the Almighty. None of my prayers will ever be accepted again. However, I can suggest a cunning plan to you that might lead to the defeat of Prophet Musa's army. Send thousands of beautiful women, adorned in fine clothing and jewelry, into the camp of the Children of Israel. If even one of them succumbs to sin, their entire army will face destruction."Following Balaam's advice, his people sent these women into the camp. One of the leaders of the Children of Israel became infatuated with one of these women. He took her before Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and asked, "O Prophet of Allah, is this woman lawful for me?" Musa (peace be upon him) replied, "Beware! She is forbidden for you. Let her go immediately and fear Allah's punishment." However, overcome by his desires, the man ignored Musa's (peace be upon him) command, took the woman to his tent, and committed a sinful act.As a result of this transgression, a plague struck the camp of the Children of Israel. Within an hour, seventy thousand people died. The army was left in disarray and retreated, defeated and humiliated. This calamity caused great sorrow to Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). Why Was Balaam bin Beor Disgraced? It is narrated that some prophets asked Allah why Balaam bin Beor, despite being blessed with such knowledge and piety, fell into such disgrace. Allah replied, "He never showed gratitude for My blessings. If he had been grateful, I would not have stripped him of his spiritual gifts and disgraced him in this world and the Hereafter."(References: Quran, Surah Al-A'raf, 7:175-176; Tafseer Ruh al-Bayan, Vol. 3, p. 139)
