The Story of Hazrat Junaid Baghdadi (RA) – A Lesson in Faith and Devotion

Once, Hazrat Junaid Baghdadi (RA) suffered from an eye infection. A fire-worshiping doctor advised him not to let water touch his eyes. However, Hazrat Junaid (RA) replied,

"Performing ablution (wudu) is necessary for me."

After the doctor left, he performed ablution and offered the Isha prayer before going to sleep. By morning, his eye pain was completely gone. A divine voice proclaimed,

"Since you did not neglect your worship for the sake of your eyes, we have removed your pain."

When the doctor saw his recovery and asked how his eyes healed overnight, Hazrat Junaid (RA) simply replied,

"Through ablution."

Hearing this, the doctor said,"Indeed, I was the real patient, and you were the true healer."

He then embraced Islam. It is narrated that someone once saw Hazrat Junaid Baghdadi (RA) in a dream with the Holy Prophet (PBUH). In the dream, a man presented a religious question to the Prophet (PBUH). Instead of answering, the Prophet (PBUH) pointed towards Hazrat Junaid (RA). The man said,

"When you, O Prophet of Allah (PBUH), are present, why refer to someone else?"

The Prophet (PBUH) replied,

"Every Prophet is proud of their nation, but I am more proud of Junaid than anyone else."

During one of his sermons, someone complained,

"Your words are beyond my understanding.Hazrat Junaid (RA) responded,

"Place seventy years of worship under your feet and bow before Allah. If even then you fail to understand, then indeed, the fault lies with me."

On another occasion, when someone praised him during a sermon, he said,

"In reality, this is the praise of Allah, not mine."

Hazrat Junaid (RA) used to say,"There are six types of veils (barriers) that hinder a person’s connection with Allah. Three are for common people:1. The self (ego),2. The creation (worldly distractions),3. The material world.

And three are for the special people (those close to Allah):1. Worship,2. Rewards,3. Pride over miracles."He also said,

"A believer's heart changes seventy times in a single day, but the heart of a disbeliever does not change even once in seventy years."
