The Story of Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) and the Drunkard
The Story of Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) and the Drunkard
Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) once saw a drunkard lying unconscious on the ground, muttering “Allah, Allah” with his wine-stained mouth.
Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) sat down beside him, cleaned his mouth with water, and remarked, “This unaware man does not know whose pure name he is uttering with this impure mouth.” After cleaning his mouth, Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) left the place.
When the drunkard regained consciousness, people informed him, “While you were unconscious, Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) came here, cleaned your mouth, and left.” Hearing this, the drunkard felt ashamed and deeply regretful. He began to weep and addressed his own soul: “Shameless one! Now even Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) has seen you in this state. Fear Allah Almighty and repent for your future.”
That night, Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) had a dream in which he heard someone say, “O Sari! You cleaned the drunkard’s mouth for Our sake; We have cleansed his heart for your sake.”
When Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) went to the mosque at the time of Tahajjud, he found the drunkard offering Tahajjud prayers. Hazrat Sari Saqati (RA) asked him, “What caused such a transformation in you?” The man replied, “Why are you asking me when Allah has already informed you?”
