The Story of the People of Prophet Lut (AS) – A Warning for Humanity

The most shameless nation in history was the people of Prophet Lut (AS). They abandoned women and were interested in men, especially young male travelers. According to the Talmud, the people of Sodom were cruel, deceitful, and unjust in their daily lives. No traveler could pass through their area safely, and no poor person could get even a piece of bread from them. Often, strangers would die of hunger in their land, and these people would strip their clothes and bury their bodies naked.

They had turned their valley into a massive garden where they openly committed indecent acts without shame.

Prophet Lut (AS) was sent to guide them. He called them towards the worship of Allah and urged them to repent from their immoral actions. He said,

"Why do you commit such shameful acts? Why do you leave women and turn to men for pleasure? Indeed, you are a foolish people."

Prophet Lut (AS) preached to them day and night, but they paid no attention. Instead, they proudly continued their sinful ways and became annoyed by his advice. They even threatened him, saying,

"If you don’t stop interfering in our affairs, we will expel you from our town."

Despite their threats, Prophet Lut (AS) continued his mission. One day, the people themselves demanded punishment, saying,

"If you are truthful, bring upon us the punishment of Allah."

Allah had been giving them time to repent despite their horrible sins. But when they openly challenged Prophet Lut (AS), Allah decided to punish them. Allah sent special angels to carry out the punishment. These angels were Jibreel (AS) and Mikaeel (AS).

The angels came to Prophet Lut’s (AS) house in the form of handsome young men. When Prophet Lut (AS) saw them, he became very worried, fearing what his people would do if they saw these guests. Prophet Lut’s wife, Wa'ila, was a disbeliever and secretly supported the sinful people. She went and informed the people of Sodom about the visitors.

The people rushed to Prophet Lut’s (AS) house. Prophet Lut (AS) pleaded with them, saying,

"These are my daughters; they are lawful for you. Fear Allah and do not disgrace me in front of my guests. Is there not a single righteous man among you?"

But they arrogantly replied,"You know well that we have no interest in your daughters. You also know what we truly desire."

This shameless response showed how deep they were in their sinful ways. Prophet Lut (AS) locked his doors and hid the guests in a room. The people surrounded the house and even tried to climb its walls. Prophet Lut (AS) was distressed, but the angels revealed their true identity and said,"O Lut, we are messengers of your Lord. These people will not harm you. Leave this town with your family during the night and do not look back. Your wife will stay behind and face the punishment with the rest of the people."

As the people of Sodom tried to break into the house, Angel Jibreel (AS) struck them with the edge of his wing, causing their eyes to go blind. Despite their blindness, they continued to threaten Prophet Lut (AS).

That night, Prophet Lut (AS) left the town with his family. However, his wife turned back and was destroyed with the others.

At dawn, Angel Jibreel (AS) lifted the town of Sodom high into the sky, so much so that the angels in heaven could hear the barking of their dogs and the crowing of their roosters. Then, he turned the town upside down and smashed it into the ground. After this, Allah sent a rain of stones upon them. Each stone was marked with the name of the person it would hit, and when it struck, it shattered their heads. By sunrise, the entire town was wiped out.

The beautiful valley of Sodom was transformed into a filthy, lifeless place called the Dead Sea. Its water is so polluted and salty that no living creature can survive in it. To this day, no benefit can be taken from the Dead Sea, and it serves as a warning to humanity.

Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of this destroyed city near the Dead Sea. The remains show that life ended suddenly in the town, with people engaged in their daily routines.

Even today, in some parts of the world, these sinful acts are promoted and protected by law under the guise of personal freedom. It is a source of pride for many, which is a clear sign of moral decline.May Allah guide us to the right path and protect us from such sins, granting us success in this life and the hereafter.
