The Story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and the Fire-Worshiper: A Lesson in Kindness

The Story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and the Fire-Worshiper: A Lesson in Kindness

Sheikh Saadi (RA) narrates that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) would never eat alone. He always waited for a guest to join him for a meal. One time, an entire week passed without any guest visiting his home. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) even went out several times searching for a traveler or someone he could invite to share his meal.

This week-long wait made him weak from hunger. Finally, after a week, he found an old, sick, and weak man who was starving. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) invited him to his home for a meal, and the man gladly accepted.

At home, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) treated the guest with great respect, seated him at the dining table, and placed food before him. When they began to eat, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) said "Bismillah" (in the name of Allah) before starting his meal, but the old man did not say anything.

Surprised, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) asked him why he did not say "Bismillah" before eating. The old man replied that he was not a Muslim but a fire-worshiper. Hearing this, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) felt uncomfortable, got upset, and removed the man from his dining table, regretting that he had invited a non-believer to his home.

Soon after, Allah revealed to Prophet Ibrahim (AS), saying:

"O My Friend, We know that this man worships fire instead of Us. Yet, despite this, We have been providing him with sustenance for a hundred years. But you could not even bear to feed him one meal and turned him away."

Sheikh Saadi (RA) explains through this story that goodness and kindness are not tied to someone's religion, race, or background. A good deed is rewarded by Allah, and Allah grants the ability to do good to whomever He wills. Therefore, never stop doing good because of someone's religion, color, or ethnicity.
