The Story of Prophet Noah (AS) and the Elderly Believer: A Lesson in Love and Divine Mercy
Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (AS) narrated: When Prophet Noah (AS) was building the Ark, an elderly believing woman would visit him daily, carrying her bundle, and ask, "O Prophet of Allah, when will the Ark set sail?" Prophet Noah (AS) would reply, "It will take time." The woman would sit there until evening and then leave.
One day, Prophet Noah (AS) said to her, "O woman, when the time comes, you will be informed." The woman returned and waited for the call. Meanwhile, the flood arrived, and the Ark sailed, but Prophet Noah (AS) forgot to call her (as if he was made to forget her by Allah’s will).
After the flood subsided, one day, Prophet Noah (AS) felt a desire to visit the city from where he had set out. Upon reaching there, he noticed a hut with a lit lamp inside. Surprised, he wondered how any house could survive the great flood. He called out, proclaiming Allah’s greatness. The same elderly woman appeared with her belongings and asked, "O Prophet of Allah, is the Ark ready to sail?"
Prophet Noah (AS), astonished, said, "Wait, old woman. Do you not know what happened?" She replied, "O Prophet of Allah, know what?" He said, "A great flood came, heavy rains fell, and everything was destroyed. Did you not notice?"
The woman replied, "O Prophet of Allah, I only saw a day when there were clouds and some light drizzle." Prophet Noah (AS) looked towards the heavens in amazement and said, "O my Lord, what is this matter?"
Allah revealed to Prophet Noah (AS): "O My beloved Prophet, because of her love for you and the promise you made to take her aboard the Ark, I took responsibility for your promise. I ensured that the punishment did not reach her."
Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (AS) then said to the believers around him: "O believers, it is obligatory upon you to convey this hadith to all believers until the Day of Judgment. Tell them that those who love us may face the Day of Judgment, but just as this elderly woman did not feel the flood, our believers will not feel the horrors of the Day of Judgment."
