The Wisdom of Hazrat Bayazid Bastami (رحمتہ اللّٰه علیہ): A Lesson in Humility

It is said that a Qazi (judge) once came to Hazrat Bayazid Bastami (رحمتہ اللّٰه علیہ) and said:"We have more knowledge than you. But why is it that our words lack the same impact as your blessed sayings?"

Hazrat Bayazid Bastami (رحمتہ اللّٰه علیہ) replied:"Hang a vessel filled with walnuts around your neck and walk through the market, announcing, 'Whoever slaps me, I will give them these walnuts.' Go around every street and alley of the city like this. Then, your words will gain impact (meaning that until you destroy your ego completely, you cannot achieve this rank)."

The Qazi responded:"Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah)."

Hazrat Bayazid Bastami (رحمتہ اللّٰه علیہ) replied:"This is your second mistake. I am telling you something that will eliminate the arrogance of your ego, and you are seeking forgiveness for it!"
