Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA), also known as Ghaus-ul-Azam, was one of the greatest saints of his time. He lived in Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate, and came from a noble lineage. He was a Sayyid from both his father’s (Hassani) and mother’s (Hussaini) sides. Born in 470 or 471 AH, he lived for 91 years, passing away in 561 AH.

Early Life and Education

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA) received his early education from renowned scholars of his time. He learned the Quran with proper recitation and studied its meanings deeply. He excelled in religious sciences and surpassed all scholars in Baghdad. One day, during a Quran recitation session, he explained an ayah (verse) in 11 ways and further revealed 40 spiritual meanings. His explanations left everyone in awe.

Spiritual Training and Struggles

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA) endured many hardships and spiritual practices. He spent 25 years wandering in the deserts and forests of Iraq, isolated from people. He prayed Fajr with the same ablution used for Isha for 40 years and completed a full Quran after every Isha prayer for 15 years. He stayed in Baghdad’s Burj (tower) for 11 years, praying and fasting while waiting for food from unseen sources.

Recognition as a Saint

At the age of 10, he began to notice signs of his spiritual rank. Angels walked alongside him to school, asking others to give him space. He saw an unknown man once who was told by angels that this boy was destined to be a great saint.

Preaching and Influence

As he grew older, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA) began preaching. Initially, he spoke to small groups, but soon thousands gathered to listen. His sermons often attracted up to 70,000 people, and many documented his teachings. His influence spread rapidly, and many people converted or changed their lives after attending his gatherings.

Miracles and Spiritual Status

Numerous miracles were attributed to Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA). He held a unique spiritual status, which, according to Shah Waliullah, allowed him to perform miracles consistently without losing his connection to higher spiritual realms.

Founder of the Qadri Order

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA) founded the Qadri Sufi Order, which became popular in the Indian subcontinent. While the teachings of the Qadri and Chishti orders have merged over time, the Qadri Order retains its unique identity.
