The Mystery of Death in Ants

The Mystery of Death in Ants

When an ant dies, it informs its colony in a unique way. Scientists have discovered that a dying ant releases a specific smell called "oleic acid." This smell alerts other ants, prompting them to immediately carry the dead ant away to prevent attracting other insects.

When other ants detect this smell, they know one of their companions has died and begin the burial process. In one experiment, a scientist applied this "death smell" to a living ant. The other ants mistakenly thought it was dead and tried to bury it, even though it was alive and moving. Once the smell was removed, the ant was allowed back into the colony.

Ants also have organized cemeteries away from their nests to keep the colony clean. If burial ants get covered with the death smell, they clean themselves before returning to the colony to avoid being buried alive.

This behavior reminds us of Allah’s words in the Quran: "There is no creature on earth or bird that flies with its wings, but they are communities like you." (Surah Al-An’am, Verse 38)
